How to use Paws and Learn®

Key points

Enjoyment, enjoyment, enjoyment!

Mistakes don't exist in Paws and Learn®!

It is vitally important that readers are left to relax and enjoy PAL, without feeling anxious about making errors.

So readers should not be corrected during participation in PAL. This cannot be emphasised enough!

Remember, central to PAL is the development of reading ENJOYMENT.  Skills will develop in time, but not before readers begin to relax and enjoy reading, and feel more positive about books in general.

The 5 Components of Paws and Learn®

01 PAL

Call Archie

The videos in 'Call Archie', are designed for readers to 'dial in' to or call Archie on tablets, phones or computers.

Participants may like to ...

1.  Read to Archie.

2.  Relax with Archie whilst simply watching the videos, and listening to the music, birds or waves.

3.  Read along to text on the screen (see separate versions under development).

'Call Archie' forms the central and essential basis of PAL.

Further Information

Participating Dog

PAL can be used as a standalone programme with Archie, using this website only, or can be adapted to any school visiting dog programme or to the home setting reading to a family dog (or other willing pet).

Risk and Welfare

The welfare of all, including the dog and any human participants, is paramount in any animal-assisted intervention.   It is critical that everyone understand that not all dogs are suitable for animal-assisted interventions including PAL.
